The FNSDS is a non-profit society that represents the Band Social Development Workers of BC. The Band Social Development Workers (BSDW) administer Income Assistance On-reserve for BC First Nation Communities. We provide BSDW training, policy clarification and essential services as they relate to Social Development and Income Assistance.

The FNSDS is also involved in consulation with federal and provincial governments agencies as well as First Nation organizations in promoting Accountability, Active Measures and Sustainability for BC First Nations.

This training is a follow-up training to the Level 1. Level 2 provides knowledge, skills and information on how to effectively support employable clients to seek independence from Social Assistance and the tools, knowledge and practices for working more effectively with Aboriginal clientele. Included are training session with Guiding Circles and Douglas College. Service providers associated with Social Development such as the Ministry of Education and Income Assistance, Service Canada and the Indian and Northern Affairs Canada provide information and an interactive opportunity to answer BSDW questions pertinent to their Social Development responsibilities.

The Level 1a training offers basic training in the SA Application process, documentation, caseload management and monthly reporting.  A request for registration fax will be sent province wide one month prior to the training to advise field staff of its availability.

The George Watts Post Secondary Education Bursary Award is designed to support First Nations students who are planning for a career in social sciences and/or social work.

Who Can Apply?

You are eligible to apply for financial assistance if you are:

BSDW Level 1a, 1b & Level 2

BSDW Level 1a and 1b  Training - These orientations are provided by the FNSDS Centre to new and novice BSDWs, utilizing the BSDW Self-directed Training Manual.
The Level 1a training offers basic training in the SA Application process, documentation, caseload management and monthly reporting.
The Level 1b Training is a new component presently in development and that will offer technical information on the Assisted Living Manual, in depth Social Development Policy, information on Old Age Pension process and more.
